Hemsö develops a new municipal school in Helsinki
- Non-regulatory information
Hemsö is developing a new elementary school and kindergarten with capacity for 850 students in the Pasila district of Helsinki. A 20-year lease agreement has been signed with the City of Helsinki. The leasable area for the school building is 7,200 square meters, along with an additional 3,400 square meters for the schoolyard.
Hemsö won the City of Helsinki’s lease procurement for a kindergarten with space for 200 children and an elementary school for 650 students. The school will be developed in the growing residential area of Northern Pasila in Helsinki. The building will replace the temporary school facilities currently located on the site.
‒ It is exciting to be part of developing a public building that will become a landmark for the new residential area. We have had a very good collaboration with the City of Helsinki in the ongoing development projects, and we can benefit from the experiences we have gained in other projects together with the city. Hemsö’s focus is on delivering premises that meet the needs of our tenants in the best possible way, says Kirsi Viheriäranta, Project Manager at Hemsö Finland.
Great emphasis is being placed on the safety of the temporary school, which will remain operational during the construction period.
‒ Together with the construction contractor, we are carefully planning secure access routes for the students. The school yard at the temporary school will also be adapted to interact with the construction site, says Kirsi Viheriäranta.
Construction is planned to begin in the summer of 2025, with an estimated construction time of about two years. The building, which will have an A energy class, will use locally produced energy, including geothermal heating, air-water heat pumps, and solar panels.
The school in Pasila will be Hemsö’s fifth educational project with the City of Helsinki in recent years, with previous development projects including several school buildings that will create a total of 2,800 new school places.
